First Week Successes

Staff,

We officially completed the first week of school for the 2012-2013 school year!!!!!!  I hope that you had as much fun as I did!!!  School is truly no fun without the students.  For this week, please post a success story from last week.  It can describe a student or it can be something that dealt specifically with you.  For me, I would say that we got the "customer service" piece right during registration.  Parents waited for extended periods of time and yet they remained calm.  This was due in large part to the numerous staff members assisting them with smiling faces.  Another success for me was that I survived the week in a totally new environment!!  Thanks for being a great staff!!!

  1. Our third grade students were able to learn the Place Value Rap and the dance within two days. They did an excellent job performing for the administrators and we were able to film it for KDEA. Thank you admins, third grade team, Mrs. Brinkley, and Mr. Damon for your support!!!! Our students were excited to see their performance on "T.V".

  3. Our third grade team hit the road running last week, with our teachers on task and looking out for one another. It's been wonderful to have a lunch period all together this year. Go 3rd team!!

  4. The Promethean Boards are now connected and in use. I was able to train myself from a video, and my students were introduced to the board use today. My 1st/2nd graders appeared to be mesmerized by the beauty of the Galapagos Islands and the animals viewed using the board.

  5. Our cafeteria plan is in full swing and I am very pleased how we have worked as a team to make it come together. Also, our bus dismissal procedures have also been successful due to all the teamwork in making it more efficient. We are a team here at Daniels and I am so proud to be working with all of you! We have the best students and staff in the world.

  7. My students take a math packet as homework. On Monday they receive material for the whole week and they are supposed to bring it completed on Friday.
My surprise was big last Friday when 86% of my students brought their homework completed on their first week of classes and they actually put a lot of effort on doing it right !!

  8. Last week was a great success. We use a variety of learning opportunities including song and dance to learn place value. The students enjoyed it and learned about place value.

  9. Last week, I introduced Read-to-Self for the Daily 5. By Friday, my students knew what was expected of them and they were eager to participate. When they completed an activity, they went right to their book boxes and found a spot in the room to read by themselves. They are excited about reading!

    1. I LOVE Daily 5. I sped up my process a little this year becuase it is hard to read to self when you don't know how to read. Plus, I found this group a lot better working the whole time like the book suggests. Good post!

  11. I attended a football game on Saturday for one of my students. His family (mom, dad, 3 siblings and student) was really excited that I came out to support him. I took a picture with him at the request of parents, I would post if I thought it was okay. I hope to build a relationship with each of my students/families at school and in the community. I also have really enjoyed working with my third grade colleagues; they have been helpful with the transition into GPISD!!

  13. Last week as I walked through the office a mother, grandmother, and child were completing enrollment papers. The mother and grandmother quickly commented, "Mrs. Sturgeon, it is so nice to see you. Erica loved being in your class." Erica came over and gave me a hug saying, "Remember me? I missed you." It is a great feeling to know that you have made a lasting impression on students and families. I've decided to work with Erica for the Handprints on Hearts program.

  14. Last week was the start of an exciting adventure in second grade. We learn about each other and procedures on having a successful year. I was most impressed with my student's vocabulary while creating our social contract. They expect me to be a helpful teacher. The group also expressed that their classmates should be forgiving and part with a hug or handshake. I'm looking forward to new experiences as we grow together.

  15. Last week being my first week back at school, I realized I ultimately love what I do. Also thankful for some of my former Sam Houston students, being at David Daniels in the same place for a second consecutive year is a true blessing in itself for those students. Giving all our students a official home. A place to shine and I'm primed and ready for our students to be the BEST.

  17. I am so proud to say I got the Science lab up and running. I am not through organizing, but it is open and ready to teach our babies about science. Another success was bus duty...ironed out the kinks and my partner Mitchell and I have it down like clock work. I appreciate everyone being at their duty stations and we are ALL working as a team :)

  18. Last week was the most fun I have ever had during the first week of school! I could not be more pleased with our first round of cluster meetings! Everyone was prepared and participated! (even the Promethean Board!) Thank you to all of the cluster members as well as those who helped with the videos! What a talented group of teachers we have at Daniels!

  19. 80% of my 5th grade students passed their Lab Safety Test. I even had two that made 100!

  20. Rotations in 4th grade are going surprisingly well. The students are enjoying the breakup in the schedule and seem to be experiencing success. It appears that they seem to be pretty will off academically, so I am looking forword to more success stories to share.

  21. I'm impressed with my students. We are working with poetry and I challenged them to write a poem for their grandparents and I was impressed with their creativity.

  22. My success story was helping a tranfer student transition to Daniels. He was having a bad day and comparing Daniels to his previous schools and insisted on going home. We took a walk to the college center. He was so excited to see college materials and information about being a firefighter that he forgot all about being at a new school. I was SOOO excited to see his smile!!!!

  23. My class is wonderful. They are eager to learn and said the reason it is important to read is so they can go to college.
It is catching on! Thanks also to their Kindergarten teachers for preparing our students for First grade. They are precious.

  24. I am very proud of my pre-k kids! We were able to rotate centers successfully by the end of the week with them! :) YAY!!!This week though, one of my student's made friends and participated in large group instruction. We were soooo happy for him!! :)

  25. Tiahesha Hill

Before my students leave, I sing a special goodbye song to EACH and EVERYONE. I sang the song as usual on Friday, but at the end, the students decided to add my name to the song. I also had a lot of students say they were happy to be in school. Made my day!

  26. My first week success would be that I made it through an entire week being completely out of my element. I'm constantly being asked are my students getting use to my environment. It's sctually their teacher that is having to do the most transitioning. Middle school is like night and day from Elementary school, but I enjoy my homeroom, so they provide an ounce of hope. :-)

  27. It was great to hear "awesome" and "wow" from my students while they read. We are excited about all the interesting facts we can learn about as readers!

  28. I was so happy to get KDEA on the air. It is great fun for me and the students. I also made my first video with iMovie. Teaching is the best job in the world.

  29. This is from Ms. Sherman:

My students are reading Bridge To Terabithia and they come to class eager and ready to read.
I want to thank Ms. Kates for making my week go better because she let me borrow her sharpener until I get one. That has made my week go a lot smoother.

  30. I had perfect attendance the first week of school. All students wearing uniforms all week. It was wonderful!

  31. So far so good! All the kids are ready to learn and love when I introduce a new center. Surprisingly, the center I opened recently seemed to be the biggest hit--The Shoe Center (they practice "tying shoelaces" on hard construction board with laces)! Also, my team and I are starting to get into a groove with lesson planning and being able to cross curriculum into different content areas, yea!

  32. Love my students. We are learning and having fun. Kudos to Mrs Vale for getting the students well prepared for Kinder. They know the routines, how to take turns, they know their colors, shapes AND they all know how to write their names. Way to go Nancy!

  33. Students learning the routines and following them! Very happy about that :)

  34. My success story is that I know I am exactly where I'm suppose to be. The week started off REALLY rough but by the end of the week I was able to say "I did it!" As a first year teacher and brand new to EVERYTHING I think that that's a success :)
